Carol Camino, en Turkana (Kenia)

Carol Camino, the low vision specialist at the Institut de la Màcula, has visited Turkana in Kenya as a member of a working group from the Spanish Society of Low Vision Specialists (SEEBV), of which she is the president. The initiative forms part of the Turkana Eye Project, which has been promoted since 2003 by the Emalaikat Foundation. It seeks to improve the health and standard of living of nearly 1,200,000 million people. The group went to an educational institution for visually-impaired children to assess their pathologies in order to determine whether their condition could be helped with visual aids or surgery.

They also visited the Lodwar Hospital where opticians and ophthalmologists cooperated closely in examining hundreds of children and adults. Almost a hundred patients underwent operations, mostly for cataracts, while a hundred had their eyes tested.

The SEEBV delegation also joined a public tribunal to assign the first optician optometrist to the hospital in the area.
