The November edition of the Spanish Journal of Macular Pathology (Revista Española de Patología Macular) features an Expert Clinical Guide for the treatment of exudative Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD). The Guide is endorsed by 16 retina specialists from the Spanish Retina and Vitreous Society (SERV), of which Dr. Jordi Monés forms part. It confirms officially that the most effective treatment for exudative AMD is the proactive regimen applied for some years by the Institut de la Màcula.

After detecting the initial and possible symptoms of exudative AMD, it is essential to see a specialist as soon as possible. From this point on, the Guide states that a series of tests need to be performed to confirm that the patient is suffering from AMD. Those recommended are: visual acuity, fluorescein angiography, angiography with indocyanine green, optical coherence tomography, autofluorescence, microperimetry and differential diagnosis.

After carrying out all the examinations and confirming that the patient is affected by exudative AMD, he or she must receive a specialised or individualised treatment to halt the disease. Sometimes, the treatment does not produce the expected results. In this case, the ophthalmologist needs to perform new studies and take new measures in an attempt to resolve this whenever possible.

The Institut team, as well as providing prior advice, recommends treating the pathology before it progresses. The sooner a solution is sought, the lesser the consequences. Furthermore, we advise continuation of treatment even if the lesion is inactive.

Among the Guide’s authors are Dr. Jordi Monés, the Director and Ophthalmologist of the Institut de la Màcula. The other 15 retina specialists to have signed the document are: Alfredo García-Layana, Luis Arias, Marta S. Figueroa, Javier Araiz, José María Ruiz-Moreno, José García-Arumí, Francisco Gómez-Ulla, María Isabel López-Gálvez, Francisco Cabrera-López, José Manuel García-Campos, Enrique Cervera, Félix Armadá, Miguel Ángel Serrano, Juan Donate and Roberto Gallego-Pinazo.
