Jordi Monés al Para Todos la 2

Dr. Jordi Monés MD, PhD, the Director of the Institut de la Màcula and the Medical Director of the Barcelona Macula Foundation, has discussed Age-Related Macular Degeneration and research in an interview on the Spanish state broadcaster RTVE.

Speaking on the programme Para Todos la 2, Dr. Monés described the evolution in the field of diseases that cause blindness and the research in the fight against them, especially in pathologies of the macula and retina like Age-Related Macular Degeneration, Pigmentary Retinosis and Stargardt’s Disease.

An ophthalmologist who specialises in the macula, retina and vitreous, Dr. Monés said that, together with genetic predisposition, “smoking, body mass index and unhealthy lifestyle habits can increase the chances of the over-50s contracting AMD”.

Dr. Monés was very optimistic about the clinical trials for improving AMD treatment being undertaken by the Institut de la Màcula. “In 10 or 15 years, there will be effective treatment for currently incurable diseases that cause blindness”, he said.

At present, Age-Related Macular Degeneration is the leading cause of legal blindness in Spain and affects over 25 million people worldwide.
