Dr. Jordi Monés, the Director of the Institut de la Màcula, was interviewed on Sunday by La Gran Vida, a programme on Spain’s Cadena Cope radio station. The show is devoted to presenting different ideas for helping to improve the quality of life of the elderly.

During the interview, Dr. Monés drew attention to “age-related macular degeneration (AMD) that starts to be noticed after the age of 50. Today, thanks to research, wet AMD is a chronic disease while for dry AMD; we are still working towards a solution".

Dr. Mones stressed the need for home testing for early detection of "a disease that doesn’t warn. The best way to know if the AMD symptoms have begun is staring straight lines as the horizon or grid. If the patient detects deviations or lumps in those lines, he will probably start to suffer an early form of the disease," said the Director of the Institut de la Màcula.

Intraocular injections are one of the most effective treatments for AMD, as long as they are kept in time to preserve the initial profit. Although it may seem initially, those are a painless procedure.

"AMD is a disease that is becoming epidemic because of the progressive aging of the European population and we must fight through research," said Dr. Mones.

Finally, Dr. Monés highlighted the scientific work carried out by the Barcelona Macula Foundation (BMF), organization from which a large group of specialists in visión diseases are developing innovative lines of research in three areas: atrophic AMD, retinitis pigmentosa and Stargardt's disease.
