The Institut de la Màcula wins one of the three prizes for the best oral communications at the OPTOM 2016 Congress

An oral communication presented by Dr. Marc Biarnés has won a prize at the 24^th International Optometry, Contactology and Ophthalmic Optics Congress, OPTOM 2016. Entitled «Diagnostic discrimination between healthy patients and those with incipient glaucoma using OCT», Dr. Biarnés’s work was produced in collaboration with Dr. Marta Pazos —the expert in glaucomatous pathology at the Institut de la Màcula. The Congress, held in Madrid on 8-10 April, saw 135 communications presented and programmed into thematic groups.

Professionals from the Institut de la Màcula delivered further lectures, two of which came at the session devoted to Macular Degeneration. Dr. Biarnés explained the conclusions drawn from the analysis of atrophic AMD subgroups in the communication «Phenotypes in atrophic Age-Related Macular Degeneration through cluster analysis». Meanwhile, Míriam García, the Institut’s clinical trials coordinator, expounded on «Reticular pseudodrusen detection methods».

Dr. Biarnés also provided the introduction to the first plenary session of the Congress, entitled «How to apply evidence in clinical practice in the case of controversial subjects». He also taught the monographic course «Diabetic retinopathy detection through different imaging techniques».

The Institut de la Màcula team’s journey to the Spanish capital for the three-day Congress enabled them to compare and network knowledge with professionals who represent all areas of optometry and ophthalmic optics and come from around the world.
