The Cap de la Vila pharmacy in Sitges played host to the first sessions of the Live for Seeing 2016 campaign on Thursday and Friday. Over thirty people underwent a screening conducted by professionals from the Institut, using equipment provided by Topcon. The aim of this campaign is to detect risk of Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) in people of over 50 years old who have not been diagnosed with the disease. The tests are recommended particularly for men and women with a family history of AMD and for those who present risk factors (smokers, those with a diabetic pathology etc.) The initiative was warmly welcomed by customers invited by pharmacists to undergo the tests at the pharmacy, which belongs to the Ecoceutics group and is located in the old part of the town. Among those screened, the visiting optometrists from the Institut de la Màcula detected two cases that need to be assessed by an ophthalmologist. However, everyone was reminded about the need to undergo periodic tests to prevent diseases that do not present symptoms in their initial phases.
The Live for Seeing campaign is an Institut de la Màcula initiative in collaboration with Ecoceutics Pharmacies and enjoys the support of Topcon and the Barcelona Macula Foundation: Research for Vision. It is a peripatetic campaign of examinations that will make stops at pharmacies throughout Catalonia. The next sessions will be held this Thursday and Friday, 17-18 March, at the Brió pharmacy, in Canyelles, Barcelona.
