AMD ceases to be a cause of blindness with the right treatment
06/11/2013 ·
This was the headline of a recent article published by the El Periódico newspaper on the evolution of the treatment of Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD). In the words of Dr. Jordi Monés, AMD “has gone from being a disease which causes irreversible blindness to a chronic disease which reawakens the hope of those who suffer it”.
The article appeared in the Da+Visión programme, which is promoted by Novartis with the collaboration of the Institut de la Màcula and the Spanish Society of Low Vision Specialists (SEEBV).
A total of 707,857 people currently live with AMD in Spain. Globally, the figure rises to 150 million. If the disease is treated, up to 30% of patients may be able to recover some of their lost vision and three out of every four patients to have followed the treatment correctly halt the deterioration in their sight.
