After receiving one of the grants provided by theEuropean Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ESCRS), Dr. Paula Verdaguer, the specialist in ophthalmology at the Institut de la Màcula, commenced this September her collaboration with theUniversity Eye Clinic of the Maastricht University Medical Center (MUMC), where she will work with one of the top specialists in this field, Dr. Rudy Nuijts.

Dr. Verdaguer’s excellent curriculum recently earned her the award, which recognises the work of young ophthalmologists with a growing profile in Europe. This will enable the Institut de la Màcula specialist to perform her research in the area of the cornea, refractive surgery and cataract in greater depth, exploring the most innovative and pioneering techniques with the aim of making them available to the Institut’s patients.

Dr. Verdaguer has published numerous scientific articles on the latest treatments in cornea and refractive surgery and she forms part of the principal national and international ophthalmological medicine societies, such as the Catalan Ophthalmology Society, the Spanish Ophthalmology Society (SEO), the Spanish Society of Refractive Implant Surgery (SECOIR) or the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ESCRS).

The Institut de la Màcula is already performing the most innovative techniques in refractive surgery among which are laser cornea surgery and the implantation of phakic intraocular lenses which respect the eye’s natural crystalline lens.

“The choice of one treatment or another depends on the prior, systematic and personalised study performed by the Institut’s medical team on each patient, with the aim of guaranteeing the maximum safety and effectiveness”, Dr. Verdaguer explains.
