New headquarters and expansion of specialties
23/11/2012 ·
With the move to the Institute's new facilities in September, we have commenced a new stage which includes the incorporation of professionals into the medical team and the consequent expansion of the services of our therapeutic units. We would like here to highlight the arrivals of Dr. Nieto, one of the most reputed specialists in ocular plastic surgery, together with Dr. Verdaguer, a recognised ophthalmologist in cornea, refractive surgery and cataract.
Dr. Paula Verdaguer, Head of the Cornea, Refractive Surgery and Cataract Unit
As an ophthalmologist specialising in cornea, refractive surgery and cataract, Dr. Paula Verdaguer Agustí joined the team at the Institut de la Màcula in October.
A graduate in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Barcelona, Dr. Verdaguer has specialised in the pathology of the cornea, ocular surface and conjunctiva. She performs refractive surgery using the excimer laser, implantation of phakic lenses, toric lenses and presbyopia correction lenses together with cataract surgery with state-of-the-art technology.
Dr. José Nieto Enríquez, Head of the Ocular Plastic Surgery Unit
Dr. José Nieto Enríquez joined in November to become the Head of the Ocular Plastic Surgery Unit. An ophthalmologist specialising in ocular surgery, Dr. Nieto Enríquez is a graduate in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Barcelona and specialised at Vall d’Hebron Hospital in Barcelona.
We have incorporated this new speciality into the Institut de la Màcula to address the treatment of pathologies of the conjunctiva, the ocular adnexa and the lachrymal ducts. These pathologies are usually visible to the human eye and therefore to gain full patient satisfaction it is not enough to solve their medical problem but it is also important to avoid leaving visible signs of the treatment applied.
With the extension of the premises and the new facilities, the Institute's scientific team has reinforced its research work in which the Barcelona Macula Foundation has collaborated by concentrating its efforts on those eye diseases which are currently incurable, such as dry AMD, pigmentary retinosis and Stargardt's disease.
With these new features, we at the Institut de la Màcula will continue working to offer our patients improved and more complete medical care in the field of eye health by extending our services to other areas connected with ophthalmology
