Dr. Jordi Monés, the ophthalmologist specialising in macula, retina and vitreous, the Director of the Institut de la Màcula and the Director responsible for Barcelona Football Club’s Medical Department, presented one of the “Smoke-Free Class” Prizes at the CosmoCaixa Museum in Barcelona on Thursday 4 June.

“Smoke-Free Class” is a European programme intended to prevent 12-14 year-olds from smoking or, at the very least, delaying them for as long as possible. The initiative began in Barcelona in 1997 and has covered the whole of Catalonia since 2004. Over these years, “Smoke-Free Class” has reached more than 50,000 secondary-school children in the Autonomous Region.

The Programme is coordinated jointly by the Public Health Agency of Catalonia, the Department of Health, and the Department of Education of the Government of Catalonia.

The Catalan Youth Agency, the Spanish Association Against Cancer, “la Caixa” Foundation and Barcelona Football Club also participated as collaborating institutions by each sponsoring a particular prize.

Over 4,300 pupils from almost fifty Catalan schools have taken part in this year’s Programme.
