Dr. Monés inaugurates the Conference of the Catalan Society for the Treatment and Control of Tobacco Addiction, in collaboration with the Spanish Society of Community Pharmacy of Catalonia  (SEFAC Catalunya), the Tobacco Addiction Unit of Bellvitge Hospital and with the support of Pfizer, Novartis and GSK.

Tomorrow, Friday 8 February, sees the start at Caixaforum (Avda. Francesc Ferrer i Guardià, 6-8, Barcelona) of the Third Edition of the Conference organised annually by the Catalan Society for the Treatment and Control of Tobacco Addiction.

This year's event will boast the participation of Dr. Jordi Monés, Director of the Institut de la Màculaand the Barcelona Macula Foundation. Dr. Monés will inaugurate the Conference at 9.45 a.m with a talk entitled: The Experience of the “Quit Smoking with Barça” Campaign.

Dr. Monés is a member of FC Barcelona's Board of Directors, the Head of the club's Medical Department and the promoter of the initiative to ban smoking from the Camp Nou stadium.

He will provide details on this innovative campaign launched recently by the club in collaboration with the European Commission to help football fans throughout the world to “Quit Smoking with Barça”. Smoking is the leading cause of mortality in Europe (700,000 deaths annually are caused by tobacco addiction).

This initiative is aimed at helping the 28 million smokers of between 28 and 34 years old in Europe to give up and has been extended to the 27 EU countries over the past two years.

The day's events, which conclude at 5.30 p.m., provide an interdisciplinary reflection which enables the addressing of tobacco addiction treatment, the genetic bases of nicotine addiction, the different treatment options and the different agents involved.
