Barcelona plays host on 14-17 June to a new edition of the National Congress of SEPAR, the scientific society to which 3,600 respiratory health professionals belong in Spain.

Dr. Nieto, an ophthalmologist who specialises in ocular plastic surgery at the Institut de la Màcula, will be the guest speaker at the symposium scheduled for the final day of the Congress, Monday 17th, in which attention will be turned to the relationship which exists between respiratory disorders and other pathologies.

The Institut de la Màcula specialist will deliver a talk on the relationship between ocular disorders and sleep apnoea syndrome and its treatment. Dr. Nieto’s participation at the Congress stems from an article published in 2009 in collaboration with another doctor from the Institut, Dr. Badal, in which they addressed how certain ocular disorders are connected with disrupted breathing during sleep.

Over recent years, this connection had solely and exclusively been established with heart disease but the research by Dr. Nieto and Dr. Badal highlighted other symptoms such as glaucoma, floppy eyelid syndrome or nonarteritic anterior ischaemic optic neuropathy. The study concluded that it is essential to adopt a multidisciplinary approach in which the ophthalmologist plays a part together with the primary care doctor and the sleep specialist.

Cancer and epilepsy are other pathologies which are related to the respiratory diseases about which the experts will discuss in the symposium.

Dr. Nieto is an ophthalmologist who specialises in ocular plastic surgery at the Institut de la Màcula. A graduate in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Barcelona, he subsequently specialised in ophthalmology at the Vall d’Hebron Hospital in Barcelona. In his surgery at the Institut, Dr. Nieto performs cosmetic eyelid surgery through the use of minimally invasive techniques without visible scarring, together with non-surgical facial rejuvenation with state-of-the-art medical treatment. He is also a specialist in reconstructive surgery of the eyelid, orbit and tear duct.
