Dr. José Nieto, the ophthalmologist specialising in ocular plastic surgery at the Institut de la Màcula, will give a presentation on “Aponeurotic Ptosis Surgery” at the Seventh Training Course of the Spanish Society of Ocular and Orbital Plastic Surgery (SECPOO). This forms part of the Society’s 25th Congress, which will be held on 17-19 June in the city of Salamanca.

Palpebral ptosis is the drooping of one or both eyelids, which leads the iris to be covered more than usual. This causes a loss of visual field, visual fatigue and an aesthetic alteration in the form of a sad or tired look. There are various types of drooping eyelid although the most frequent is senile ptosis, which comes with age. Palpebral ptosis can also be congenital or related to muscle diseases.

Palpebral ptosis is treated through surgery and the technique is chosen on a case-by-case basis. The current trend is for minimally-invasive interventions which result in swift recovery.

In his lecture, Dr. Nieto will review the techniques performed in this type of surgery and identify the future steps and developments related to them.
