Dr. Jordi Monés, the ophthalmologist specialising in macula, retina and vitreous, and the Director of the Institut de la Màcula, has taken part in a TV debate on the banning of smoking in open spaces.

The debate on the Para Todos la 2 programme, broadcast by Spanish State Television on 20 April, was entitled “Smoking in public spaces in the open air”. It looked at the initiative to ban smoking in FC Barcelona’s Camp Nou stadium, which Dr. Monés spearheaded in 2011, and the importance of keeping tobacco away from open spaces.

Dr. Monés said that smoking caused over 700,000 deaths annually in Europe alone and also led to chronic diseases. One of these is Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD), a pathology from which “smokers are four times more likely to suffer”.

The other participants in the debate were Joseba Zabala, a public health doctor from Vitoria-Gasteiz, and Esteve Fernández, the President of the Spanish Epidemiology Society.
